Degummed cashew nut shell liquid

Degummed cashew nut shell liquid

Degummed Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a versatile, non-edible byproduct of the cashew processing industry. While raw CNSL contains high levels of gums and impurities, the degumming process refines the liquid, making it a valuable industrial raw material, particularly in the green chemical sector.

Applications

  • Friction Materials. Used to manufacture brake linings and clutch facings due to its excellent heat resistance.
  • Surface Coatings. Acts as a base for anti-corrosive paints, especially in marine environments.
  • Laminating Resins. Provides flexibility and chemical resistance to industrial laminates.
  • Insulating Varnishes. Utilised in electrical components for its high dielectric strength.
  • Foundry Chemicals. It serves as a core oil in foundry operations, helping to bind sand moulds that require high thermal stability.

Characteristics

  • Appearance. A dark reddish-brown, viscous liquid.
  • Odour. Characteristic phenolic, slightly acrid scent.
  • Solubility. Soluble in most organic solvents; insoluble in water.
  • Specific gravity. Typically ranges between 0.950 and 0.970 at 25°C.
  • Viscosity. Significantly lower than raw CNSL, improving its flow and “pumpability” in industrial settings.
